The Island of Ireland is the most westerly country in Europe and very sparsely populated in parts. Geographically, it is broken up into four regions. The North of Ireland (Ulster) is part of the United Kingdom and the remaining three form the Republic of Ireland.
The national sport of the Republic is Gaelic Football and also Hurling. Economically, the country is suffering from a protracted recession which was fuelled by an inflationary housing boom and which caused a near collapse of the banking system.
The largest population centres in the Republic can be found in Dublin and Cork. Transport links around the countries have improved but can be expensive and the newer roads are mainly tolled but do offer reasonable time saving if one is short for time. The best shopping can be found in Dublin and also in Belfast. Many shoppers flock over the border to Newry to gain cheap deals on certain items but recent changes in the levels of VAT have made certain items comparable. However, second hand cars can in the main be purchased more cheaply than down South but it's important to check out the excise import duty required.
