Ireland has a reputation of producing strong writers. Nowhere better is this exemplified than in the story 'Ulysses' written by James Joyce. Take a trip along the dart line in Dublin to the opening scene of the book where Leopold Bloom shaves in a Martello tower. The towers are put in place along part of the Eastern Irish coastline and acted as an early warning system in case of invasion during the Napoleonic era. An interesting point to note is that the material of construction of the Ulysses tower visitors' centre is different to that of the one in Skerries.
Stephen Dedalus plays Blooms' friend. The tower was in fact rented out by a writer friend to Joyce who spent some nights there. Nearby is the forty-foot in Dalkey where a traveller can sample some of the cold water of Ireland's sea. Walk along the beach and take in the scene of the Dublin bay where prawns are fished from boats which leave Skerries harbour.
