Introduction

It's possible to setup a Satellite System in Ireland where there is a once off payment and you do not have to pay monthly for a few limited channels.  There are 'free to air' and 'free to view' services.  

Sky Freesat Card

For a Sky system, you can get FreeSat from Sky which is a card you'll have to buy.  This card will enable ITV1,2,3,4 CHANNEL 4 AND CHANNEL 5 with any Sky digibox . ITV1,2,3 + 4 are now available on UK + Irish boxes using this card.

Free To View

You can also get a generic decoder as part of a Satellite deal which is not a Sky box and you don't need to buy a FreeSat card. 

If you're willing to have a once off payment then the rest is free.  However, the more sophisticated systems will give you a box where you can buy a card and view pay per view services pointing at multiple satellites.  One of the cheaper options involves buying a Pace box and a simple satellite setup.  On this page, I'll provide links to some of the Irish providers of this service.

Lidl

A typical system can also be bought from http://www.Lidl.ie for around 100 Euros.  Sign up to their mailing list and keep an eye on this.  They roughly do a deal twice a year.  The downside is you'll have to install yourself or a fun challenge depending on your viewpoint.  Each unit will contain a mpeg decoder which decodes the open or free signal, a satellite dish, a LNB which is used to convert the signal, some connectors and cabling.  Worth getting also is a signal detector.



It's possible if you're near the border with the North or facing the UK that you can get a free to air system where no satellite dish is required.  However, if you're on the outskirts of the transmitter range then you will be better off getting a Satellite dish as it'll keep breaking up on you.  Purchasing a decoder which takes card is a better option if you want extensibility.

You can also get a motorized setup but best to talk to those in the shop for what you're looking for.  Cheapest setup can be bought as a kit over the internet.

Dreambox

If you're looking for a real technical challenge, you might want to consider the Dreambox.  This is state of the art and not for novices and is a Linux box with a built in decoder where you can program your box.

If you're looking for some help in both buying a dreambox and getting it setup there are dreambox sellers on Ebay who will answer any questions you have before you consider buying.  For example, you might want to know the range of channels it supports and what extras you can get.  You can mail the seller directly with your questions.   You can also bid on a second hand one if you're unsure or go for a new one...
